By Jerry Van Cleve, Chapter Chair –
The Chippewa Chapter held a chapter meeting on August 25th at Lakewoods Resort near Cable. Topic of the meeting was BATS! Brian Heeringa, a Wildlife Biologist with the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, gave a 1 ½ hour presentation to fourteen attendees on bat biology, and potential impacts of the recent listing of the northern long eared bat as “threatened” to forest management in northern Wisconsin. After the presentation, we got a close-up look at Brian’s “rescue” bats–basically pet bats—and then Brian took us to some NLEB roost trees that he had previously located by trapping NLEBs, gluing transmitters to their backs, and radio tracking them.
On a sad note, long-time Chippewa Chapter member, SAF Fellow, Golden Member, and former Wisconsin SAF State Chair, John J. Vrablec passed away on August 31, 2015.
