Barden was a leader in promoting sustainable forestry; teaching thousands of Wisconsin students, both young and old, the value of caring for our renewable natural resources. He provided the tools and encouraged woodland owners to use all available public and private, financial, educational and technical resources to assist them in managing their woodlands.

Alvin (Al) Barden has been involved in most every aspect of forestry education to landowners, timber professionals, and the public throughout his career. Starting his career at Trees for Tomorrow, then spent 18 years at Nicolet College in Rhinelander teaching Timber Production, and finally was Executive Director of the Wisconsin Forest Productivity Council. He spent 9 years as administrator of the Wisconsin Tree Farm Program.
In addition he took leadership roles with other organizations including the American Tree Farm Program (both nationally, and Wisconsin,) FISTA (Forest Industry Safety Training Alliance,) and the Wisconsin Woodlands Owners Association (WWOA,) Golden Sands RC & D District, as well as the Wisconsin Society Of American Foresters (SAF.) He was involved in developing, and served in leadership positions for all of these organizations.
